Settling in
Helping your child to settle confidently and securely into nursery is one of our most important priorities. Each child is unique and they will have differing experiences of spending time away from their parents and carers. However, we will ensure that our settling-in process meets each child’s individual needs.
This process begins with a home visit before their first day at nursery. Your child’s allocated key person will visit you and your child at your home and will spend time getting to know your child in an environment where they feel most comfortable and secure. This will be the beginning of a developing relationship between your child, yourself and their key person who, after the visit, will be a recognisible and friendly face on your child’s first day.
There are no set time frames for settling-in as each child’s needs are different. The key person will work with you to agree the best approach for your child. A parent or other important adult who has a close relationship with your child must be available during this settling-in time.
On their first day your child will stay at nursery for just an hour alongside you or the family member or adult supporting them. On the next day they will stay for longer, and if they are settling well your child’s key person may suggest that you leave them on their own for a short period.
Following this the key person will discuss and agree with you the best way forward for your child until they are securely settled. Your child’s key person will of course support you throughout this process.
